She competed on the boys ' team in high school. She took home the high school women's state title and later won the national championship at the World Team Trials. After graduating from high school, Tate attended Central Washington University, where one of her competitors named Rosalia Watson, urged Tate to join the mixed martial arts team. Within a few months of joining, Tate formally joined the mixed martial arts sport team located at Central Washington University. In February of 2013 she was officially a part of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Tate is well-known for her double-leg takedowns, generally performed through the act of picking up an opponent while pressing them against the cage. Many media publications have described her ground game as impressive and dominating, noting that opponents of Tate are usually overcome when they're knocked down. Tate's success as a UFC fighter is not the only reason that she has had success.
